We are pleased to announce that the \u201cComputer Vision and AI Algorithms Edge Computation on UAVs – (edgeAI4UAV)\u201d project has been selected as one of the five research projects which will be funded through the \u201cAI4Media – A European Excellence Centre for Media, Society and Democracy\u201d network (www.ai4media.eu<\/a>).<\/p>

The research team consists of scientists from the Management Science and Technology department and the Computer Science department of International Hellenic University, who will cooperate to implement innovative research activities, which will mainly focus in combining deep learning computer vision algorithms and classic path-planning and control algorithms for autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) applied in cinematography tasks.<\/p>

The edgeAI4UAV project will develop lightweight computer vision and Artificial Intelligence (deep learning) algorithms capable of detecting and tracking moving objects, while at the same time will ensure robust UAV localization and reactive navigation behaviour. The results of the algorithms will be exploited by an embedded decision-making module (edge computation), which will accomplish dedicated navigation missions, like follow a specific moving object (e.g. actor or animal), turn at a specific angle of view (e.g. side face, front face), getting closer or farther to it, etc. Thus, the embedded decision-making module will have the ability to define the navigation behaviour of the UAV in a dynamic manner at real-time, in order to accomplish the envisioned tasks.<\/p>

The edgeAI4UAV has indirectly received funding from the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation action programme, via the AI4Media Open Call #1 issued and executed under the AI4Media project (Grant Agreement no. 951911).<\/p>
