According to the Internal Regulation of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) (Issue B’ 4751/20.08.2024), the Academic Advisor provides guidance and support to undergraduate and postgraduate students throughout their studies. For doctoral candidates, this role is assumed by the Supervisor.
The Academic Advisor has a consultative role regarding the student’s academic progress, is available to hold emergency meetings to provide assistance and referral to specialists (such as the Counseling and Psychological Support Center) in cases of personal difficulties affecting their studies, monitors the student’s progress, and encourages them towards the best possible achievement of their professional goals.
The teaching staff, the administrative staff, the Directors of Laboratories and Clinics, the Heads of Divisions, the Chairs of Departments, as well as the competent services of the Institution, collaborate with and support the Academic Advisors in carrying out their duties.
The Academic Advisor has a primarily consultative role in matters concerning the student’s academic progress. More specifically, the Academic Advisor:
a) Supports the effective transition of students from secondary to tertiary education, in the case of first-year students.
b) Provides information on the overall operation of the Curriculum, the structure of the Study Guide, the infrastructure offered, laboratory or other units, as well as the opportunities for students to participate in laboratory activities and in research projects conducted within the Department and the Program.
c) Provides information on the services offered by Democritus University of Thrace to support students in their studies and directs them appropriately (e.g., to the Career Office, the Academic Coordinator for the Erasmus+ Program, or the Internship at the Department, etc.).
d) Encourages their participation in educational activities in order to best support their education, as well as their systematic collaboration with the teaching staff.
e) Provides support in determining course combinations within the framework of offered Curriculum, in order to help students, select the appropriate courses according to their personal interests, skills, and abilities.
f) Provides support to students regarding potential difficulties arising either from insufficient attendance or due to the evaluation results in individual courses, which may constitute an obstacle to the smooth progression of their studies.
g) Provides support in the development of students’ individual plans regarding both the continuation of their studies and their professional development, based on their interests, and informs them about the next-level curriculum offered by the Department as well as the professional opportunities available to graduates of the specific Curriculum.
